Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans (DFSP), Declined Critical Illness Cover?

Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans (DFSP) is a rare form of cancer, a soft tissue sarcoma that develops in the deep layers of skin. It is sometimes described as having tentacles that can grow into surrounding fat, muscle and even bone.

If you've been diagnosed with (DFSP) you might be worried about may things, probably first and foremost your health. You might have to take time off your work for treatment, tests and to recover.

Critical illness cover is designed to pay out a lump sum when you have been diagnosed with certain types of conditions, this nearly always includes cancer. Some cancers are excluded though, smaller non-invasive cancers or premalignant cancers aren't included. So are many skin cancers, in fact most policies only pay out for malignant melanoma.

DFSP was, until around 2016 classed as a skin cancer and as such, excluded from critical illness policies . That was until it's reclassification as a sarcoma, which basically means the cancer doesn't originate from the skin but from the soft tissue below. This of course means that all critical illness providers will now pay out for DFSP? Wrong.

Critical Illness Providers continue to reject claims for DFSP as they still believe it to be a non-invasive skin cancer despite overwhelming medical evidence to suggest otherwise.
